Language functions in Fabian Herkenhoener’s work as both visual material and an unstable carrier of meaning. Drawing on his own writing as well as literary, poetic and found sources, Herkenhoener fragments, repeats and reorganises words and phrases, allowing them to move between legibility and abstraction.

His paintings emerge through an interplay of deliberate composition and chance, bringing text into dialogue with gesture, colour and layered surfaces. Rather than communicating a fixed message, the works remain open and associative, reflecting Herkenhoener’s interest in language as a means of processing encounters between the individual and the outside world. Meaning is constructed, disrupted and continually rearranged, leaving space for the viewer to form their own connections.
